There are certain moments in life that are indelibly imprinted upon our memories. Many times these are the “big moments” of life like our wedding day, the birth of our children, or the first time we saw the ocean, mountains or Grand Canyon. Sometimes these moments are seemingly insignificant moments that leave a disproportionately large memory in our lives.

One of these moments occurred to me when I was a student at Asbury Theological Seminary. I took a preaching class with Professor Jerry Mercer who described the act of preaching as “one beggar telling other beggars where to find bread”.

I could not quote anything else he said all semester, but I have carried that definition with me throughout my ministry. It keeps me humble and focused on my primary task—to help others discover the “Bread of Life” that satisfies our deepest longings, needs and desires.

Steve Jobs once said,

“We all long to put a dent in the universe.”

My Jesus already put a colossal dent in the universe (this is a gross understatement) when he defeated death, the grave, and the powers and principalities of this world to bring salvation, redemption, life, and restoration. My longing is to tell everyone about his dent not to make a dent of my own. I want more of Jesus and less of me.

This is what drives me to write and podcast on this platform. I want to tell as many beggars as I can where to find the same satisfying bread that I have found.

Jesus said that he came so that we might have life to the full (John 10:10). He wants us to have a life of freedom, joy, hope, peace, love and strength.

He came so that we can live unleashed.
